Grade: B-plus

There are a couple of different ways to look at this recruiting class for Michigan football. One is that at No. 12 and No. 2 in the Big Ten, it’s pretty solid. It certainly keeps U-M among the elite programs in the Big Ten.

But is it enough to catch Ohio State? Probably not.

Ohio State has the No. 3 class in the country, including a five-star wide receiver. The Buckeyes also have the best class in the Big Ten, even though Michigan held that distinction a year ago.

Currently, Ohio State is in another universe when it comes to the rest of the Big Ten and recruiting. And while the Buckeyes have shown they can be vulnerable against other Big Ten teams, it seems their laser focus on Michigan makes it hard for the Wolverines to pull the upset.

But in the race to be the best among Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa and the rest of the Big Ten, Michigan football did a really good job. The class doesn’t feature a star quarterback because of the injury to Johnson, yet if U-M can keep five-star QB J.J. McCarthy in 2021, it might not matter.

Maybe the most exciting part is that offensively, Michigan is getting pieces better suited for Gattis’ system and another potential star in running back Corum.
