Michigan Football: Grading the Wolverines win against Maryland
Offense
It was… meh.
Quarterbacks
Grade: C+
Shea Patterson got the job done, but he missed some big throws. He was taken out early, so the 151 yards is not an accurate indication of his performance. Also, Maryland’s defense did the same thing to Tanner Morgan (12/21, 138) last week against the undefeated Golden Gophers.
Dylan McCaffrey thought it was still Halloween when he got the nod as he did his best impression of Joe Milton by throwing fastballs when touch was needed. After some initial nervousness, Dylan completed three passes.
Running backs
Grade: B
While Hassan has emerged as one of the best in the running back room, the surprise of the game is Tru Wilson, who averaged ten yards-per-carry. Even with that performance, Hassan will likely continue as the starter, but Charbonnet is obviously the favorite inside the red zone and has set the freshman rushing touchdown record after getting two more in College Park.
Wide receivers
Grade: B
The receivers looked ok during an unenthusiastic win on the road. Nico Collins shined on the 51-yard completion that was essentially a 50/50 ball, winning those has turned into a calling card for the junior from Alabama.
Other than that play, the performance by the receiving corps was unremarkable.
Tight ends
Grade: B+
Sean McKeon found himself wide open as time was winding down in the first half. The connection between Sean and Shea brought UM within field goal range.
Nick Eubanks also shined on a touchdown on Saturday. On a brilliantly designed and executed play, Shea was left on an island with a defender in his face and a wide-open Eubanks sprinting to the sideline hoping to be seen. Patterson threw high and behind, but Nick adjusted and walked in for the touchdown.
Offensive line
Grade: B+
No QB hurries, no QB sacks recorded. Clean game for the big men in the trenches. This group gets a B+ instead of an A because it feels like there were a lot of yards left on the field in a game with a smaller and inferior opponent.
