Michigan football: Everything you need to know about Illinois
Special teams
The giant punter Blake Hayes will be booming punts all-day if the Michigan defense looks anything like it did last week, which is a good thing and a bad thing. Hayes averages 44.9 yards per punt and is described by coach Smith as “a weapon.” His punts are long and accurate which will pin the Wolverines deep in their own territory.
Illinois Kicker James McCourt is no slouch either, connecting on four of his six field goals this season and a perfect 21/21 for extra points.
For kick returns, Dre Brown is the man for the Illini and has an average return of 31 yards, which is second in the Big Ten.
For punt returns, It could be any one of four members of the Illinois football team to drop back. None of them have any notable success.
Matt’s musings
There is a chance Brandon Peters doesn’t play on Saturday due to an upper-body injury, although Lovie Smith said Peters is “ready to go” and “pumped” for the contest.
Should Brandon sit out, Matthew Robinson, the dual-threat quarterback from California, will get the start. Robinson appeared in three games and was mistake-free filling in for Peters Saturday.
No matter who starts at quarterback, Michigan should blow out Illinois as they did Rutgers. The Fighting Illini allowed their last two opponents to rush for over 300 yards, and that trend should continue, notwithstanding any significant changes to play calling.
