Michigan Football: Everything you need to know about Iowa
Danger on the end
Defensive end A.J. Epenesa has been kept at bay this season, but just one year ago, A.J. led the Big Ten with sacks (10.5). Even with Epenesa’s limited statistics, Iowa has not allowed more than 17 points so far, and they give up an average of fewer than nine points per game.
Linebacker Kristian Welch is the tackle leader with 30. The 6-foot-3 239-pound senior has been a staple for this defense since seeing game action as a true freshman. Over his career, Welch has accounted for 88 tackles and two interceptions.
Kristian is accompanied by Djimon Colbert, the second-leading tackler for the team with 23. As a redshirt sophomore, Djimon has established himself as one of the best pass coverage linebackers.
While the defense features depth and talent, the real leadership is behind the scenes with defensive coordinator Phil Parker, the mastermind behind the defensive victory over Michigan in 2016. Phil is entering his eighth season at the position and his 13th overall season with the Hawkeyes.
One of the keys to victory here will be winning the sack battle. The other key for Michigan is controlling the line of scrimmage to give true freshman standout Zach Charbonnet the ability to have a breakout game and solidify his spot among the best running backs in the Big Ten.
