Special teams

Rutgers has a punter with an interesting style imported from Melbourne, Australia. Punter Adam Korsak averages 46 yards per punt on 16 attempts, and he’s trained with the best. The Scarlett Knight website notes Adam “trained with former NFL punter Nathan Chapman and former NFL kicker John Smith at ProKick Australia.”

Korsak uses his training well, earning an All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2018, and setting multiple school records including longest punt with his 79- yard boomer.

Trey Avery and Avery Young are the kicker and punt returner, respectfully. With five returns notched this year, Trey Avery averages 23-yards per return. Young has been kept at bay, receiving five punts and returning them for only 25 yards.

“Ok, if we win out, we control our own destiny”

The loss to Wisconsin was inexcusable and indefensible. Nothing on the field went as planned, and the offense appeared as confused as the fan base watching the disaster.

The defense hadn’t been that exposed since, well, the last two games of 2018. And the staff knows they messed up. Impressively, Harbaugh did something scarcely seen among college coaches; he took responsibility.

“We didn’t play physical enough,” Harbaugh said to the media on the Monday following the loss. “We were outhustled. I take responsibility for that. In many ways that we were outschemed, also take responsibility for that. That’s my job to make sure that we’re completely sound in all offenses, defenses, everything that we’re running. How I manage the team and get them to play hard. Play tough.”

Jim knows how bad that was, but as one anonymous former player points out, the season isn’t over.

“We lost a game a couple of games in my career that on paper we shouldn’t have lost,” the former player said to Wolverine Maven’s Michael Spath. “The first thing any coaching staff does is refocus ‘Ok, if we win out, we control our own destiny. We can still win the Big Ten,’ stuff like that.”

Michigan football must win this game. Jim Harbaugh must win this game. Defensive coordinator Don Brown must dominate defensively and Gattis must do anything other than what we saw last Saturday.
