Michigan Football: Jim Harbaugh, Wolverines hit new low vs Wisconsin
Michigan football didn’t just lose to Wisconsin Saturday, it was dominated and it was a new low for Jim Harbaugh in year five.
After giving up 62 points in a loss at Ohio State last year, it was hard to imagine things getting worse for Jim Harbaugh and Michigan Football.
But Saturday in Madison, it did get worse and the Wolverines hit rock bottom.
From the opening play, Wisconsin owned UM. The Badgers didn’t do anything fancy. They ran the ball right at Michigan football. They pushed Michigan around and the Wolverines, who are clearly all talk, couldn’t do a darn thing about it.
Michigan wasn’t just beaten Saturday, it was demoralized.
The Badgers made the Wolverines, who Harbaugh said should be considered the Big Ten favorite, look like a team that couldn’t win the Mac, let alone the Big Ten.
Two drives and a bunch of long runs by Jonathan Taylor put Michigan down 14-0 early. A fumble by Ben Mason and a bad call on a Ronnie Bell reception hurt, but it wouldn’t have mattered.
Nothing would have changed the outcome in this one.
Following two weeks to prepare for Wisconsin, Michigan should have been ready, instead, the Wolverines seem disinterested.
Shea Patterson talked about making a statement then opened the game 4-of-12 with an interception. He was benched at halftime for Dylan McCaffrey, who was knocked out with a blow to the head.
Of course, with the score 35-0, Patterson threw a touchdown. He was good at Columbus once things were decided too.
The offense was a problem but the defense was too.
Rashan Gary is missed and maybe people will realize the impact he made. Carlo Kemp and Donovan Jeter got bullied and it made you wonder when Chris Hinton and Mazi Smith would get some run. Same with Daxton Hill at safety. I mean could Josh Metellus look any worse?
The Badgers have talent sure, but Michigan, on paper at least, has more.
But when you can’t hang onto the ball, can’t be disciplined and make mental mistakes over and over again, talent doesn’t matter. Execution is what matters and under Harbaugh, it’s gotten worse and worse.
Also, Don Brown is not a good defensive coordinator.
Take out the seven points allowed against Michigan State last season and heading into Saturday’s game, his defenses have allowed 36.5 points on the road against ranked teams. And people wonder why the Wolverines can’t win on the road.
The offense isn’t better but let’s stop pretending this DC is part of the solution. He’s one of the biggest problems. His lack of adjustments are embarrassing and his schemes would only work if he had Alabama’s talent, which he doesn’t. Even then, he would find a way to screw it up.
The biggest problem though is Harbaugh. He has stuck with Brown and Patterson, even when it’s clear they can’t deliver. But more than that, when you talk so boldly about your team and then you turn it over seven times in three games and just look disinterested, it’s a problem.
Heads need to roll. Patterson needs to be benched, Brown needs to be fired and that’s just the start. If guys aren’t producing, go with someone else. Something needs to change and there is no more time to wait.
This the new low for Michigan football and Jim Harbaugh and either things will improve or this will be the beginning of the end.
We all want to believe it’s the former, but it’s hard not to feel like it’s the latter.
