Michigan Football: 3 breakout candidates for Wolverines in 2019
By Nick Popio
Ben VanSumeren
When you talk about do it all type of athletes, you have to mention Ben VanSumeren. By just getting a glimpse of him, he can be viewed as a big boy who resembles what you want in a prototypical fullback. It’s clear as day to see why the young worker can be viewed as a sleeping giant lying in the weeds that is ready to pounce on its prey.
History is on the side of VanSumeren when it comes to the fullback spot in Harbaugh’s goal-line situations.
Like past fullbacks before him, VanSumeren has the chance to vulture those touchdowns away from other backs. That is of course if the new offense allows him to accomplish that in certain areas.
Ben Mason is getting a hard look at defensive tackle and is creating a buzz in the two-deep at that position. That can open the door for VanSumeren to show up every once in a while and do some damage in the backfield.
If so tempted to, Harbaugh may use him at linebacker too. He’s tested there before and his body is built to do just that. Simply put, the hard-working youngster appears primed to do something special sooner rather than later.
