Jalen Mayfield wins the right tackle job

One of the most fascinating position battles in the fall will come at right tackle as Jalen Mayfield, who is entering his second year in the program takes on Andrew Stueber for the job.

Stueber is essentially the incumbent after starting the final few games of 2018. He held up fairly well, however, the offensive line didn’t play particularly well against Florida or Ohio State.

During the spring, it was clear that Mayfield had taken a step forward and by the time practices were done last April, it was hard not to give an edge to the youngster who seems to have a higher ceiling, as well as the chance to start for multiple seasons.

You can also make the case that with Stueber as the sixth offensive lineman, the Wolverines will have better depth. He can play both guard spots and both tackle positions in a pinch, while Mayfield doesn’t quite have that same versatility.

That’s not a reason to give the job to Mayfield. He needs to earn it, but if he does, it may be the best thing for Michigan football’s offensive line.
