Michigan Basketball: Breaking down offer to 4-star PF Terrance Williams
It was a big recruiting weekend in college hoops and Michigan basketball was busy evaluating prospects. One it offered was 4-star Terrance Williams.
Ever since Juwan Howard was named the head coach of Michigan basketball, we have been trying to find out everything we can about him. How will he recruit? What offense will he run? Etc.
While we don’t necessarily have the answer to all those questions, we did find out more about what Michigan basketball’s recruiting strategy as well as learning the identity of some new priorities such as four-star forward Terrance Williams, who received an offer Sunday.
The offer was first reported by Stockrisrers on Twitter. Williams is a 6-foot-7 forward and while he had cut down his final list of schools to Georgetown, NC State, DePaul, Virginia, Stanford, Notre Dame, and South Carolina, Jake Weingarten is also reporting that Michigan is now a favorite.
The offer to Williams is significant because it is one of the first non-five-star offers for Howard and the Wolverines in 2020. Michigan was pursuing Jabri Abdur-Rahim, however, he ended up choosing Virginia.
When it comes to Williams, the Wolverines have been keeping a close eye on him and after an impressive showing over the weekend, the offer was formally extended. So far on EYBL circuit, Williams is averaging 15.6 PPG, as well as six rebounds. He’s also shooting 36 percent from 3-point range according to UMHoops ($).
Williams, who is from Washington, D.C., is ranked as the No. 14 power forward in the 2020 class, as well as the 82nd ranked player overall according to the 247 sports composite rankings.
While teams such as DePaul, Notre Dame and Georgetown have been in a good position with Williams, the offer by Michigan basketball could change that. Currently, Williams has crystal balls projecting him to the Hoyas, but if the Wolverines push hard, they should have a good shot here.
Here’s a look at what Michigan could get in Williams if it was able to land the four-star forward. This is courtesy UMHoops:
"Exactly what position Williams fits on the next level, there really isn’t a defined role. Just expect that he’s going to find a way on the floor and he’s going to find ways to be productive. He scores inside when he needs to, starts making jumpers when his inside game gets figured out and he always seems to end up having put together a much better statistical line than you would expect."
Williams may not be the big name or a five-star like many of the other recruits Howard and his staff recruited over the weekend. But Michigan is going to need three or four solid additions to this class and it’s not likely that all of them will be one-and-done guys.
Zeb Jackson is a great start and adding a piece like Williams, who could likely start at either forward position, would be key. Williams may not be the stretch four we are used to seeing with John Beilein, yet, these aren’t Beilein’s Wolverines anymore.
