Army

In the second game of the season, Michigan football will welcome an Army team that is fresh off an 11-win season, a bowl victory and a No. 19 finish in the final AP poll of 2018.

Jeff Monken has led a resurgence at West Point and has led the team to three-straight bowl games, as well as back-to-back 10-win seasons. Much like Paul Johnson did at Navy years ago, Army is doing it with a running quarterback as Kelvin Hopkins Jr. ran and threw for more than 1,000 yards last season.

For the year, Hopkins only attempted 93 passes and while that might seem to play into Michigan’s strength of stopping the run, we all know how athletic quarterbacks have given the Wolverines fits over the years.

Beyond that, Army won’t be intimidated by the Big House. The Black Knights paid a visit to Oklahoma last season, a team that eventually went to the College Football Playoff and went down by a score of 28-21.

No matter how much size, speed and athleticism you have, defending the option can be a different animal and if the Wolverines struggle to adjust, it could make the early September game much closer than expected.
