DE: Rashan Gary, Chase Winovich

Gary’s stats (2016-18): 119 tackles, 23 TFL, 9.5 sacks

The No. 1 player in the 2016 class out of Paramus, NJ, Gary arrived on-campus with instant hype.

As a freshman, he tallied 27 tackles, five TFL and one sack for one of the nation’s top defenses. His best statistical season would come as a sophomore. Making 12 TFL and six sacks, Gary was named first-team All-Big Ten by the coaches in 2017.

Even with missing four games as a junior, the coaches recognized his talent with another first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2018.

While his stats aren’t the best of any DE to ever play at Michigan, Gary was the focal point of every opposing offensive line’s game plan. The attention he drew helped free up his teammates to make plays one-on-one.

Winovich’s stats (2015-18): 166 tackles, 43 TFL, 18.5 sacks

Beginning his Michigan football career as a tight end, Winovich made the position switch to defensive end in 2015.

He would make his first career start in 2016 and became the heart and soul of the Wolverines’ defense over the next three seasons.

A two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection by the media (2017-18), the coaches tapped him with a second-team selection in 2017 and a first-team selection in 2018.

The under the radar recruit out of Jefferson Hills, PA racked up an impressive 34.5 TFL over his final two seasons. The Associated Press named him a third-team All-American in 2018.

A great example of perseverance and work ethic, Winovich represents everything that Michigan football stands for.
