Michigan Basketball: 3 NBA Draft takeaways for the Wolverines
Where will Charles Matthews land?
If it wasn’t for a freak injury, Matthews also would have heard his name called last night. His offensive game needs some work, but he’s an elite defender and that had NBA teams interested.
Of all the Michigan basketball players in the draft, Matthews might have been the most pro-ready prospect due to his defense. He is also skilled at getting to the bucket, even though free throws aren’t necessarily a strength right now.
Yet, he suffered a knee injury that will likely cost him the entire 2019-20 season. But with what he brings to the table, you have to wonder if an NBA team would be willing to invest a two-way contract in Matthews, knowing he won’t contribute until next year at the earliest.
Some speculated that he could still get drafted last night and while it didn’t happen, you would expect to see him sign with an NBA team at some point. It’s too bad because his growth in the past two seasons was evident. He certainly has a long road back but at some point, I expect to see Matthews in an NBA uniform.
