Michigan Basketball: These 2021 targets could get offers soon
Michigan basketball reached out to a number of 2021 recruits during the first contact period and here are some targets that could get offered soon.
With Juwan Howard starting to take a deeper dive into recruiting as Michigan basketball head coach, you can expect a lot more offers to come in the next weeks and months.
Of course, one thing he said he needed to do was to learn the recruiting rules and one of the key dates on the calendar is June 15 when coaches can directly contact rising juniors (2021) and early Saturday morning, Howard and UM reached out to several prospects.
Michigan basketball hasn’t handed out any offers to those targets yet, outside of 2021 big-man Bretner Mutombo, who recently received an offer. Yet, after making contact with a number of high-profile targets, some offers should be imminent.
One player that UM contacted soon after midnight was five-star Chet Holmgren, the Minneapolis product that is ranked as the third best center in the nation in 2021. Michigan was one of the first schools to contact him according to Stockrisers.
Holmgren has all of his crystal ball projections currently with Minnesota but some other offers could change that. Howard also has a great reputation for developing big men and that could be a selling point to the 7-footer from the midwest. Expect an offer soon.
Another big guy the Wolverines contacted Saturday via Stockrisers was Caleb Furst, the eighth-ranked power forward nationally and the second-best player in the state of Indiana. The 6-foot-8 forward should receive plenty of interest.
He visited UM back in February, so there is some history with him, but he hasn’t received an offer. Based on the fact that he was one of the first calls from Howard’s staff on Saturday, it should come soon.
While Michigan basketball contacted a couple of bigs, UM also reached out to five-star point guard Cam Hayes. The best player in North Carolina, who is from Greensboro has a crystal ball projection to North Carolina State. He’s 6-foot-1 and could be a dynamic guard to build the 2021 class around, although Stockrisers indicated he might be considering re-classifying for 2020.
Hayes wasn’t the only point guard Michigan basketball reached out to Saturday, the other is Kennedy Chandler, a 2021 prospect that has already been offered by Nebraska and LSU today. He’s a four-star guard from Tennessee and is one of four guys the Wolverines have reached out to.
Certainly, as with Mutombo, there are obviously other key targets in the 2021 class, but if you are looking for some guys that Howard will be recruiting hard right away — Hayes, Chandler, Holmgren, and Furst seem as good a candidates as any.
