Michigan Basketball: 5 takeaways on the hiring of Juwan Howard
There are signs that Howard would do well in recruiting
No one can say with certainty that Juwan Howard is going to be great at recruiting college basketball players. However, there are reasons to believe he would do well.
Going to the NBA and having a chance to win are two things that matter to recruits. Well, Michigan basketball has won a lot lately and in terms of getting guys to the NBA, Howard can not only point to his work with the Heat and Whiteside but also endorsements from LeBron James and Dwayne Wade.
Some people might not think that matters, but with kids these days, my bet is that it does. Beilein didn’t land a ton of top recruits in part because he didn’t target them. He had specific players and a specific way he did things. It worked well but there is no reason Michigan shouldn’t be consistently in the running for top-50 players.
The idea that All-Americans are going to walk through the door in each class isn’t realistic. But at some point, I’d expect Howard to land one or two. Overall though, with his connections in Chicago and Detroit, as well as the NBA, Michigan will recruit differently and that could be a good thing.
