Juwan Howard

Howard, the former Michigan basketball star might be the most awkward fit because of everything that happened during the Fab Five era. The fact that he also has no head coaching experience also won’t work in his favor.

However, there are other reasons that Howard is a really interesting candidate. His work under Erik Spoelstra with the Miami Heat shouldn’t be overlooked. Spoelstra is known as an offensive guru and the truth is that the college and NBA games seem to be getting more similar offensively, so Howard could bring plenty of expertise to that end of the floor.

While he doesn’t have experience recruiting, he has some solid connections and his name has some clout, especially with Michigan basketball.

If Howard was willing and able to retain assistant coaches like Luke Yaklich and Saddi Washington that could help stabilize recruiting right away in addition to helping Howard make a smooth transition from the NBA to college.

There are risks that would come with this hire, but there is also a risk in hiring someone safe that will just tread water and leave Michigan stuck as a middling contender. If the Wolverines want to elevate the program after what Beilein did, they need a dynamic hire and Howard could be it..
