Cooley has connections from Big East

There are a bunch of rumblings about Ed Cooley, the head coach of Providence and he is one name that Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider mentioned in his most recent update ($).

Cooley has some connections to Warde Manuel, who used to be the athletic director at UConn in the Big East, so the two men know each other and despite not coaching a power program in the Northeast, he has produced solid results.

Cooley has landed a bunch of top-50 prospects over the years and sent Kris Dunn to the NBA as a lottery pick so he can recruit and would do well with Michigan’s resources. However, despite a regular-season conference title with Fairfield and a Big East Tournament championship with Providence, he is just 1-5 in the NCAA tournament in five appearances.

He has a reputation for being a solid X’s and O’s coach, however, not being able to win in the tournament, especially when scouting and game planning is essential, that is worrisome.
