Juwan Howard

When Juwan Howard gets mentioned as a head coaching candidate for Michigan basketball some don’t take it seriously, but they should, because he could end up getting the job.

More from GBMWolverine

For starters, Howard has been a top assistant for the Miami Heat since 2013 and while he doesn’t have the head-coaching experience Warde Manuel said he wanted, he has interviewed with the Minnesota T-Wolves and is going to be an NBA head coach sooner rather than later.

So, would Howard consider coaching at Michigan instead?

It’s an interesting question. In terms of offensive minds, few are better in the NBA than Erik Spoelstra and Howard has worked side-by-side with him. Another thought is that college is becoming more and more like the pro game, especially with more and more players leaving early.

Even Beilein went to an offense focused on isolations and pick-and-rolls over the past two years, so there is a reason to believe Howard could adapt quite well. And even though he has no experience recruiting, Penny Hardaway at Memphis is an example of how former NBA guys can reach big-time recruits.

Recruiting seems like it would be the least of Howard’s problems. The more I think about it, the more it dawns on me that it could be a great fit. The biggest concern is whether he would want to stick with Michigan basketball long term?

If the answer is yes, then Howard is a much more serious contender than people think.
