Finding the right replacement is essential

For years, Michigan was in tatters before Beilein came along and built the Wolverines, brick-by-brick, into an elite program, not only in the Big Ten but in all of college basketball.

Now if Michigan is going to maintain that status, it has to get it right with the next head coach. Luke Yaklich is one guy that will have his name thrown out there, along with fellow assistant Saddi Washington.

Yet, as much as I love those guys, hiring the trusted assistant always seems to be a mistake. Yaklich might be a different story, but if Michigan could get an established name, from another college or even an NBA guy like Billy Donovan, that would be great.

Make no mistake, Michigan is an elite job. The Wolverines have all the resources and with guys like Zavier Simpson, Jon Teske, Isaiah Livers, Jalen Wilson, Brandon Johns and Colin Castleton, plus more, there is the talent required to win next year and beyond.

But if UM is going to remain as a perennial contender and keep winning as consistently as it did under Beilein, getting the right guy is essential. We all saw what hiring Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hoke did for Michigan football.

Hopefully, Warde Manuel finds another Beilein, instead of the second coming of Rich Rod.
