Did Michigan address its weaknesses from a year ago?

This is still a fair question to ask and even though it was nice to see the offense make some explosive plays in the spring game, at times, the missed coverages and tackles by the defense were a reminder of Columbus last November.

Throughout the offseason, much of the talk was centered around a new offense but didn’t the back-to-back defeats in blowout fashion signal a need for some sort of change?

We will have to wait and see if there is any. I suspect that Don Brown will play more zone coverage but he’s going to be the same guy. He is going to attack the quarterback and blitz to get pressure if needed.

That means the secondary has to cover and has to tackle, two areas it struggled in during those big games. But Daxton Hill, an incoming freshman that runs 4.3 and is 6-foot, should help. Ambry Thomas is 6-foot tall and quick and Vincent Gray is 6-foot-2 and also athletic.

I am interested to see where the Wolverines play Hill. A combo of slot corner, where he can defend the run, blitz and cover slots and deep safety, where he can protect against big plays with his speed is intriguing and UM has enough talented, versatile guys in the defensive backfield they could move around a bit. With the right players, a heavy man scheme can work.

We will see if Michigan football has the right guys and also if not if Brown has something in his back pocket because if his defense gets torched again by Ryan Day and Ohio State, his job might be in jeopardy, as good as he’s been.
