Freshman that could play right away

Mike Sainristil: A

When it comes down to it, no one early enrollee had a better spring than Mike Sainristil. He was mentioned early by Harbaugh and Gattis to the media and then during both the open practice and spring game, he flashed. The Wolverines used him in the slot, in the backfield and split wide. It’s going to be fun to watch how he is used this season but make no mistake, the 5-foot-10 wide receiver is going to get the football in 2019 — maybe a lot.

Erick All: B+

It’s hard not to give All the top grade for this spring but I wanted to reserve that for Sainristil. However, if we are grading this like a curve than All comes in second because he also proved to the coaching staff that he can play. Just look at the 20-yard reception he caught from Milton last Saturday. It was a great route and a great catch. The 6-foot-3 tight end also saw time at wide receiver and if you are talking about mismatches, Michigan football might have found one in All.

Mazi Smith: B

Smith wasn’t spectacular during the spring but he did have his moments. The 300-pound defensive tackle will definitely have a chance to earn some playing time this fall, although, with the emergence of Donovan Jeter, it may be tougher for Smith and Chris Hinton to find the field.

Smith showed enough to make a case for the two-deep right now and when Michigan football gets going for real this fall, Smith should be in the mix at defensive tackle right along with Carlo Kemp, Michael Dwumfour, Ben Mason, Jeter and Hinton.
