Other observations

Shea Patterson was impressive going through drills and throwing the football. He had a couple of misses but threw a dart as things we wrapping up. He’s going to be the starter, I have said that repeatedly.

But, there is a heated battle going on between Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton to be his backup and Saturday, McCaffrey made some nice throws. He has really good accuracy and even though he may not start next season, I expect him to in 2020 on top of being the No. 2 this fall.

During 7-on-7, McCaffrey connected with Eubanks on a touchdown, while also hooking up Sainristil for a score. Another pass was broken up by Gemon Green, a redshirt freshman defensive back that has had some good moments. Myles Sims from the same class also looked really smooth.

Another thing every Michigan football fan probably wanted to see was Ben Mason and he looked very natural going through the defensive line drills.

Being a good coach means knowing what to do with personnel and moving Mason to the defensive line was a genius move by Jim Harbaugh or whoever came up with it. Either way, Harbaugh approved and it’s going to pay off.

Without the team practicing in full pads and going 11-on-11, it’s hard to gauge some things and we will have a much better idea next Saturday where things stand following the spring game.

All in all, the biggest observation is that the young talent is developing and a lot of guys are standing out, which should be a good sign moving forward.
