Offense: C-

When you look at the failures of the 2018-19 Michigan basketball team, most of the blame has to lay at the feet of the offense, which was the worst it has been in years under head coach John Beilein.

In terms of points per game, Michigan averaged 69.6 which ranked 260th nationally in college basketball. While the Wolverines ranked much higher in efficiency, their 34.2 3-point percentage ranked 193rd and their overall field goal percentage was 155th.

Those aren’t the kind of numbers you’d expect from a championship team and the inability to make a jumper cost Michigan against Michigan State (three times) and Texas Tech. Down the stretch against the Spartans, the Wolverines blew 12 and 13-point leads in their last two outings in large part because UM didn’t have a closer.

Sometimes, you need to make a tough shot or two in order to pull out tough games and Michigan couldn’t do it often enough this season. Matthews did it against Wisconsin and there were other times when the Wolverines rose to the occasion, but when it mattered most, the offense simply wasn’t good enough and that needs to change for the results to be any different in 2019-20.
