Michigan proved its a big-time college basketball program

The season didn’t end the way Michigan basketball wanted it to and for a 30-win campaign, it feels really disappointing.

However, it was a great sign for the overall health of the program. Michigan lost some key players from last year’s team that played for the national championship, including its best player Moritz Wagner and all the Wolverines did was climb as high as No. 2 in the polls, reach the Sweet 16 and come within a game of winning the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles.

Michigan reached three straight Sweet 16’s for the first time since the Fab Five did it from 1992-94. That’s 25 years ago. That shows how far this program has come and despite the disappointing finish, this season was a success.

Some improvements need to be made and there could be some changes coming to the roster. But it looks like Teske, Simpson and Livers will be back for sure and along with Beilein and the young talent both on and coming to the roster, that should be enough to keep winning.

And if Iggy and Poole return, the pieces would be in place for another potential Sweet 16 run next season, a run that could go even farther if everything falls into place.
