Charles Matthews started great but tailed off in a disappointing season

Much like the Michigan basketball team as a whole, Charles Matthews started fast but was unable to finish as strong as he started and with all things considered, it’s hard not call Matthews season a disappointment.

After nearly entering the NBA draft last year, Matthews was expected to take on the mantle of being Michigan’s best player and he did that early in the year, scoring 19 against Villanova and 21 in the win over North Carolina.

Matthews had four 20-point games by early December. The problem is that he only had two the rest of the way. He also saw his scoring average dip, while also shooting a lower percentage from the field, from 2-point range and on 3-pointers.

Of course, his play on the defensive end is outstanding and that hasn’t changed. But in terms of developing the kind of offense needed to get picked in the NBA draft, Matthews fell short of that goal by a wide margin. He may still get drafted, but he has a lot of work to do.
