Run-pass option

Another key thing that Gattis talked about was that the offense would be a spread offense with pro concepts. That’s positive because Michigan wants to continue to attract NFL talent.

But another key addition to the offense is the run-pass option. We thought we were going to get a lot more of that last season with the addition of Patterson but it never really came to fruition.

Yet, it’s perfect for Michigan football and Patterson is a guy that has all the tools to execute it. Shea doesn’t run as well as some quarterbacks, but as he showed last season, he can get pick chunks of yards and defenses have to respect him.

More run-pass options would allow Michigan to take advantage of that. It allows Patterson to read the defense and if it’s a run-heavy front or whatever, he can choose to pull the ball and throw it.

What I like about that is it allows Michigan the chance to still run on early downs, but then throw on the same play if the defense stacks the box. It makes a lot more sense than just running into a heavy front time and time again.

The start of the season is a long ways away and we shouldn’t get too carried away with ourselves. But as a Michigan football fan, these are three changes that are the most exciting and should have the biggest impact on the offense in 2019.
