Michigan basketball proves it can win with toughness

Not too many years ago, Michigan had a reputation as a finesse basketball team, one that could shoot and score but couldn’t rebound or defend.

Back in those days, Michigan may have lost to a team like Florida. One that was very athletic, strong and plays outstanding defense. But not anymore, not this Michigan basketball team.

With guys like Matthews, Teske and Simpson leading the way, Michigan is bullying people when it needs to. It outrebounded Florida 42-29 and 11-5 on the offensive boards. The Wolverines owned the paint on both ends, getting the ball frequently inside to Teske, Livers and Matthews.

There is still work to do be and Michigan missed a lot of shots too, especially around the rim. But it proved that it can win an ugly game. UM shot below 35 percent from 3-point range in both wins over Montana and Florida. Yet, the Wolverines played great defense, owned the glass and held their opponent to few enough points that a few offensive slumps didn’t matter.

It’s a different formula but it has been successful all year, outside of against Michigan State. We will see if it will keep working next week, but admittedly, it’s been fun to watch Michigan be the aggressive team for once.
