Quarterbacks and running backs

QB: Shea Patterson (SR), Dylan McCaffrey (RS SO), Joe Milton (RS FR)

The quarterback battle is going to be fascinating to watch. Shea Patterson should have a good hold on the job after going 10-3 as a starter and throwing 22 touchdown passes. He was efficient throwing the football and generally avoided mistakes.

While Patterson maybe didn’t live up to expectations, he was very solid and if Gattis does adjust things offensively, it could be huge for the senior. Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton are super talented, but it seems they will have to wait their turn for another year.

RB: Chris Evans (SR), Christian Turner (RS FR), Zach Charbonnet (FR); FB: Ben Mason

At running back, Chris Evans will open the season as the starter, but he will be in name only because Michigan football will likely end using a running back committee.

Evans has flashed during his Michigan football career and he averages over five yards an attempt. He’s also a solid pass catcher. However, he’s not a bell cow. Christian Turner, who impressed in the bowl game and Charbonnet, one of the top incoming recruits, are both built more for that and all three should end up sharing the role. Tru Wilson will also contribute because of his pass-blocking and receiving skills.

Ben Mason will also be back in his role as the short-yardage back. He will also continue to make an impact as a lead blocker.
