Michigan Basketball: 3 takeaways from brutal loss at Iowa
Matthews is in a major slump
While Charles Matthews has been struggling for the past couple of weeks, his issues were more evident than ever Friday night at Iowa.
In the previous four games, Matthews had scored a total of just 34 points, which is just under eight points a game and during that stretch, he was 11-of-31 from the field. Those numbers aren’t great but it was at least 35 percent and he did hit the game-winner against Minnesota.
Yet, the way Matthews played against Iowa was truly concerning and kind of makes you wonder how he can get out of the shooting funk he finds himself in. Against the Hawkeyes, he didn’t just struggle with his jumper — he struggled with everything.
Matthews missed 3-pointers, mid-range shots and also easy bunnies when he tried to attack the basket. For whatever reason, the senior has been slumping and honestly, it seems like its in his head. Regardless, 6.8 PPG and 30 percent shooting from the field isn’t going to cut it and if he can’t break out of a funk, Beilein may need to consider some lineup changes like potentially starting Livers.
