Beilein has done amazing things with Teske

John Beilein is an incredible basketball coach. That’s nothing new, we have all known that for a very long time. But watching him work with Teske underlines how good he is and how much value he adds to Michigan basketball.

To put it simply, this program would be nowhere near this elite level without Beilein. Just look at Teske. He wasn’t highly recruited. But Beilein figured out how to use him and his 7-foot-2 frame. On the defensive end and on the glass, he has been a productive player.

But following the departure of Wagner, Teske had to play a starting role and find a way to be a regular part of the offense. And, with Beilein’s tutelage — he has done just that. I mean his touch and shooting stroke have gotten so much better it’s crazy. His skills around the basket are better and after the last two games, which have seen him pour in 30 points, defenses can’t ignore him anymore.

That’s huge for Michigan basketball. The Wolverines are back to having five guys for defenses to worry about every night. Teske may not be able to take over a game, but if you leave him wide open on screens, he will hit shots.

But it’s not just Teske. Look at how much Matthews has improved the last couple seasons, along with Poole, Simpson, Livers, Iggy and everyone else. This Wolverines team is loaded and it’s loaded because Beilein took that natural talent and knew exactly how to develop it.
