Gattis knows how to get his guys to produce

When you look at the Michigan football team, it’s clear to see that wide receiver is one of the strengths of the team. Donovan Peoples-Jones, Nico Collins and Tarik Black all have star potential and with former five-star Shea Patterson throwing them the football, the offense has huge potential.

The offense had that potential this year, but Harbaugh wouldn’t abandon his conservative, power-based offense. Against Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan State, he didn’t need to. However, it cost Michigan dearly against Notre Dame, Ohio State and Florida — three games in which the Wolverines never really had a chance because they refused to put all their cards on the table.

That shouldn’t be the case with Gattis. And while he will do well as a play caller, he has proven results as a wide receivers coach such as last season when Jerry Jeudy racked up more than 1,300 yards and 14 touchdowns for Alabama. Six other receivers on the team had at least 693 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

Michigan didn’t have a single player with that many yards, although Peoples-Jones and Collins both have more than 600 yards receiving. Still, it just shows how far behind the elite teams the Wolverines have been, despite having NFL-caliber players.

That’s why this change was needed and for all the reasons listed above, it was an absolute home run by Jim Harbaugh.
