Michigan Football will feel impact of Aubrey Solomon transfer
Michigan football has had a lot of players transferring lately and in the case of Aubrey Solomon, UM loses a guy that was essential for depth.
It seems that the Michigan football team can’t go a single day without some type of news breaking and Monday was no different as former five-star defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon announced his intention to transfer.
The news was reported first by Brett McMurphy of Stadium. With the way things work now, basically, Michigan football has to put Solomon on a list of players that can transfer. UM has to do that within two days, then Solomon can decide to transfer or not, although I doubt he will be back.
In fact, it really wasn’t surprising to see Solomon leave if you have been following him on Twitter. Recently, Solomon tweeted that “everything happens for a reason.” That’s not something happy people usually say.
I was hoping it was only a reference to his injury this past season and his lack of playing time. Yet, when he was interacting with Kareem Walker on Twitter, another player that transferred from the 2016 class, so you could kind of see the writing on the wall.
On the outside, it looked like Solomon could be poised for a big role with Michigan football next season, especially with the departure of Brian Mone. That left at least one starting position open and while there are guys like Michael Dwumfour and Carlo Kemp expected back, beyond that, there is not much experience.
Donovan Jeter is one name to watch in the future, along with some other additions in recruiting like Chris Hinton and Mazi Smith, two defensive tackles that are among the top three commits in the Wolverines recruiting class.
That’s relying on a lot of young talent. Jeter used to play defensive end but at 6-foot-3, 308 pounds, he has the size to play inside but has seen action in just two games. That leaves two proven guys, a guy that has been part of the program but played sparingly and two incoming freshmen.
As far as Solomon is concerned, his time at Michigan has been a disappointment. He showed promise at times in his first season with 16 tackles and two tackles for loss in eight games. He seemed ready to take a big jump in his sophomore season but it never happened.
Obviously, injuries put a damper on his season and he played in just two games. It would have been nice to see what he could do when healthy next season, but for whatever reason, he is ready for a fresh start.
Solomon is the latest in a string of transfers and while losing guys like Eddie McDoom, Kekoa Crawford, Drew Singleton and Walker isn’t that big a deal, at a position that lacks depth, it could hurt the Wolverines and when it’s a guy that came in with as much hype as Solomon, it’s hard not to think about the what-if’s.
