5. Bo gets his last Rose Bowl win over USC in 1989

Bo had an incredible career at Michigan football. There is no doubt, even though he never won a national championship, he is still the gold standard when it comes to the Wolverines and football coaches.

Bo guided the Wolverines to the Rose Bowl 10 times, but unfortunately, he posted just a 2-8 record in those games. Yet, one of those two victories came in his second-to-last season as head coach, when his club knocked off USC 22-14 in the 1989 Rose Bowl.

While the 1988 Wolverines started off slowly, losing back-to-back games to Notre Dame and Miami to start, they wouldn’t lose again. Michigan did tie against Iowa, but still won nine of its last 10 games including a 34-31 win over Ohio State.

The defense was the star that year and after holding the USC offense led by Rodney Peete to just 14 points, Schembechler got just his second Rose Bowl win.
