6. Tyrone Wheatley and Wolverines beat Washington in Rose Bowl
The 1993 season for was strange but successful for Michigan football. The Wolverines finished the season undefeated and ranked fifth in the country, however, three ties prevented them from a shot at a national championship.
After tying third-ranked Notre Dame to open the season, Michigan also tied with unranked Illinois and No. 17 Ohio State. Yet, in a rematch of the 1992 Rose Bowl, the Wolverines knocked off Washington 38-31 in one of the most exciting Rose Bowl games in history.
Tyrone Wheatley was the big star of the show for the Wolverines as he racked up 235 rushing yards on 15 carries along with three touchdowns. Elvis Grbac threw two touchdowns in the win, both to Tony McGee, including a 15-yarder in the fourth quarter that capped an 80-yard drive to win the game.
It was the pinnacle of Gary Moeller’s career as head coach of the Wolverines and was one of his four bowl victories.
