Michigan Football: Ranking the Wolverines top 10 bowl victories
10. Brady Hoke‘s Michigan team beats Virginia Tech in the 2012 Sugar Bowl
The trip to the Sugar Bowl in 2012 was the Wolverines reward for a 10-2 season that included wins over Nebraska and Ohio State. It was Brady Hoke’s first season in Ann Arbor and his quarterback was Denard Robinson, who was electrifying that season.
Yet, despite a strong campaign, fans outside of Michigan and Virginia Tech weren’t exactly excited to see the 13th-ranked Wolverines battle the 17th-ranked Hokies, who were 11-2.
That game wasn’t that exciting either. Michigan football actually generated less than 200 total yards and Robinson was just 9-of-21 for 113 yards. But he did throw two touchdowns and the defense came up with two key turnovers.
Eventually, in overtime, Brendan Gibbons nailed a game-winning field goal, which gave the Wolverines their 11th win and their first major bowl victory since the 2000 Orange Bowl. It remains Michigan’s only win in the Sugar Bowl and one of just 11 in major bowl games.
It still stands as the last major bowl win, something Jim Harbaugh and the 2018 team is hoping to change against Florida in the Peach Bowl Dec. 29.
