Michigan Football: 3 reasons Jim Harbaugh won’t bolt for the NFL
Harbaugh wouldn’t leave Michigan without achieving his goals
When Harbaugh got the news about the retirement of Urban Meyer this week, I bet he was furious. Why? Because I believe in my heart of hearts that the competitor in Harbaugh wanted to beat him first. Now he won’t get that chance.
That competitive spirit though, combined with his love for Michigan football, is also why he’s not leaving for the NFL anytime soon. Harbaugh wants to be like Bo and I think if he’s being honest, he wants to be remembered as one of the greatest Michigan football coaches ever.
Look at what Meyer has done. People aren’t putting him above Woody Hayes or Jim Tressel but he is definitely on the Mt. Rushmore of Ohio State head coaches. You can bet Harbaugh wants to be viewed in a similar fashion at Michigan, however, as we all know, he’s got some work to do.
Honestly, if Harbaugh was going into his seventh or eighth season at UM and put together the kind of success Meyer did, winning a national title or at least multiple Big-Ten titles, then maybe he would be ready for a new challenge. But if he left now, he would look like a failure.
Michigan fans would never let him forget his 0-4 record against Ohio State and as much as Harbaugh bleeds Maize and Blue, he would never forget it either. I’m sure it haunts him now and if he left, it would continue to throughout the rest of his career.
Harbaugh hasn’t done what he set out to do at Michigan and until he does, it’s hard to see him leaving for the NFL, no matter what the job is. So let the rumor mill churn, but don’t worry. Harbaugh is coming back to the Wolverines next season and if you don’t believe it, just look at how much he’s getting paid.
