Harbaugh can become a legend at Michigan or get fired a few times in the NFL

The National Football League is filled with re-tread coaches and when McCarthy gets another job next season or the one after that, he will join that club. If Harbaugh wanted, he could be part of that too. Or, he could stay at Michigan football and become a legend like one of his idols Bo Schembechler.

The stakes are so high in the NFL that basically no one outside of Bill Belichick has total job security. Look at Harbaugh. He took a franchise that hadn’t made the playoffs since 2002 and took them to three straight NFC title games. He won five playoff games and was a play away from winning a Super Bowl. He never even had a losing season.

McCarthy is another example. A Super Bowl winner that guided the Packers to the playoffs eight straight times and four NFC title games. One bad year without an injured Aaron Rodgers and another with him healthy and he is out, despite having a street named after him near Lambeau Field.

In the NFL, even legends get fired. Harbaugh hasn’t won much of anything at Michigan, outside of a lot of games, and even though some think he’s on the hot seat — he’s not. And he won’t be.

If he starts like 0-6 or 0-7 against Ohio State, then we can talk. For now, if he keeps piling up double-digit win seasons and major bowl berths, he can coach at Michigan for as long as he wants.
