Michigan Football: Could the Packers opening tempt Jim Harbaugh?
Jim Harbaugh seems content as the head coach of Michigan football, but if the Green Bay Packers came calling, would he be tempted to leave?
If there was ever going to be an NFL job that would tempt Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh to leave the college ranks, it would probably need a few things.
First off, the team would need to have a good quarterback. At least you would think so. I don’t know about Harbaugh or anyone else, but If I had a job like the one he has coaching Michigan football, I wouldn’t be leaving unless I had a legit chance at a Super Bowl and without a quarterback, we all know there is none.
Harbaugh is also big into the history of the game, so if a team was going to appeal to him, you would think a historic franchise like the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants or Pittsburgh Steelers might appeal most.
So now that the Green Bay Packers have a head coaching position open and a Super-Bowl winning quarterback that also happens to be a two-time MVP, you have to ask, if the Packers came calling, would Harbaugh be interested?
At this point, everything is pure speculation, however, ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky said this morning on the Dan Patrick Show that Green Bay might be interested in Harbaugh, if, he wanted to return to the NFL.
Obviously, this is full of hypotheticals and in some ways, it doesn’t really make sense. I don’t think that Harbaugh is out there looking for another job and I don’t think he would be reaching out to NFL in order to express interest.
In other words, I don’t think he’s looking to get back into the NFL, but could be convinced? It’s possible.
Yet, if the Packers called Harbaugh and said they wanted to interview him, his answer is what I would find interesting. I do believe he is content at Michigan and would be happy to be the Wolverines coach for the rest of his career. I don’t think he feels that way about many other jobs, if any. And say what you will about coach Harbaugh, he loves Michigan.
But the Packers, that might make him think and if he were ever going to leave the Michigan football program for a job in the NFL, it would be a job like that. It’s one that crosses off all the checkmarks so to speak.
I don’t really see it happening though. If Harbaugh left at this point, it would seem an awful lot like running away from Urban Meyer and Ohio State and I don’t see Jim doing that. At some point, he might leave for the NFL, but I don’t see him doing it until he completes his objective of rebuilding the Wolverines.
And while he certainly has come much closer to that goal, the game a few weeks ago in Columbus show us Michigan isn’t quite there yet.
