Michigan Basketball: 3 takeaways from Wolverines win over Villanova
Michigan looks like a legit contender
As I said, I didn’t know what to think about this Michigan basketball team after the first two games. The defense looked great, but the offense left a lot to be desired. I wondered how Michigan would handle a team like Villanova and if the defense was as good as advertised.
It didn’t take long to get an answer. Michigan didn’t just beat Villanova — the Wolverines throttled the Wildcats. Zavier Simpson controlled the game from the point, scoring nine points, dishing out six assists and grabbing five steals.
Villanova tried to pressure the Wolverines, but Simpson was unflappable. Michigan had just one first-half turnover and scored the game’s first 24 points off turnovers. It really was a one-sided affair.
You wondered how good this team was going to be and if the Villanova game was any indication, Beilein and the Wolverines are in line for another really good season, something I am sure the rest of the Big Ten was hoping not to see.
At the very least, Michigan enacted some revenge and already added a high-quality win to its NCAA tournament resume.
