Michigan Football: 3 reasons Wolverines could blowout Penn State
Penn State is good, Michigan football is just a lot better
When you get down to it, Michigan is one of the best all-around teams in the country. When you look at the Wolverines S&P rankings, you can see why. UM ranks 29th in offense, 4th in special teams and first in defense, giving them the fourth-best rating overall.
Penn State is also very good and ranks 10th. Yet, Penn State hasn’t played a team like Michigan, at least not on the road. The Nittany Lions, like most teams, are better at home and in Happy Valley, they almost beat Ohio State and Michigan State before faltering at the end of the game.
Had the Nittany Lions won those games, they would be ranked even higher, however, the same team struggled on the road to beat Indiana. This weekend, against a Michigan team that has been dominant at home (just ask Wisconsin, Nebraska and Maryland). the task is a bit tougher.
The Wolverines have won their three Big Ten home games by an average of 30 points and two of those three teams had winning records. Wisconsin even came into the Big House ranked 15th. The offense is scoring 45 points a game at home vs Big Ten opponents and the defense is allowing 14.
Certainly, Penn State is better than any of those teams, but against a highly-motivated Michigan squad, that plays incredibly well at home, those trends of home dominance should continue, which should mean a long day for the Nittany Lions.
