Michigan Football: 3 areas where the Wolverines need to improve
Michigan’s defense is great but it could force more turnovers
Michigan football dominates a lot of the statistical categories on defense but one that it doesn’t is takeaways. In that particular category, the Wolverines lag behind and ranks 84th with just nine forced so far this season.
The secondary, with help from the linebackers, have done a good job of forcing turnovers with seven interceptions. However, with just two fumble recoveries, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
As an example, Kansas leads the FBS in takeaways with 21. Ohio State, for instance, has 13 and Michigan State has 12. So it’s not like the Wolverines are way behind. However, just more than one turnover per game is a little low. With a pass rush as good as Michigan’s you would expect more interceptions and forced fumbles.
It’s curious why more turnovers haven’t happened but at some point, especially if the Wolverines want to contend for a national title, they will need to take the ball away more.
Michigan leads the nation in total defense, pass defense and is ranked highly in a number of other categories. However, if Michigan football wants to win the rest of the games on its schedule, a few more turnovers would be a great help. Hopefully, those floodgates will open soon.
