Maybe the defense doesn’t need Rashan Gary

The past few weeks have been weird with Rashan Gary. He has missed three straight games now and it’s anyone’s guess if he will return for the Penn State game in a couple weeks.

Last week, before the Wolverines took on Wisconsin, Harbaugh said he was going to play but then he didn’t and he didn’t even make the trip to East Lansing Saturday. Obviously, if he wasn’t going to play, it’s not a surprise, but when he does come back, how will he fit in?

Not to disrespect Gary or anything, but it’s going to be hard to tell Josh Uche and Kwity Paye they need to sit on the bench. Uche leads the team with five sacks, while Paye has five tackles for loss and two sacks of his own.

During the past four games, both plays have been instrumental and against two top-25 teams, Wisconsin and Michigan State, they were part of a defense that allowed a total of 376 yards in the two games. That’s not even 200 yards a game.

Certainly, Gary will be welcomed back when healthy. But as of right now, the Wolverines haven’t missed his presence.
