The Fab Five are the sentimental favorites

If the Fab Five of 1992-93 had beaten North Carolina for the 1993 national championship, they easily be the top team on this list. With Chris Webber, Jalen Rose and Juwan Howard, the Wolverines had three lottery picks and two other very good players in Ray Jackson and Jimmy King.

Webber averaged 19.5 points and 10.2 rebounds. Rose averaged 14.4 and 4.2, while Howard averaged 14.6 and 7.4. Like the 2013 team, the 1993 Michigan basketball team won 31 games, a record at the time, and lost just five times. It won seven games against top-20 teams and spent the entire season ranked seventh or higher, as well as three weeks ranked in the top spot.

Sadly, we all know what happened in that final game. Michigan bested Jamal Mashburn, Rick Pitino and Kentucky in the Final Four, only to lose to Dean Smith and North Carolina in the national title game. That play and that game ended the greatest era in Michigan basketball history.

Webber turned pro after the loss and was selected No.1 in the 1993 NBA draft. Howard and Rose made another run at it, but were part of a team that lost to Arkansas in the 1994 Elite 8. The Razorbacks went on to win the national championship that season.
