The 2013 Wolverines were fabulous in their own right

Every Michigan basketball fan knows the Fab Five but the 2013 team was right there in terms of talent. Of course, the team is known for losing a 12-point lead against Louisville in the championship game. A game that saw both Trey Burke and Mitch McGary get into foul trouble.

Spike Albrecht put on a show with 17 first-half points and four 3-pointers, giving Michigan fans hope that the Wolverines could end their 24-year title drought. But the Cardinals stormed back and when Burke fouled out late in the game, Michigan’s hopes went up in flames.

However, the 2013 team remains one of the best in school history. It finished with a 31-8 record which was tied for the most wins in school history until this year’s team broke it with the win in the Elite 8.

Michigan was also one win away from claiming a piece of the Big Ten championship. It had a poor showing in the Big Ten tourney, yet made up for it in the NCAA’s. And when Burke drained his 30-foot 3-pointer against Kansas, he created a moment that will live on forever.

Unfortunately, it will always be associated, at least a little with heartache. But the fact that the team started four eventual first-round picks, two Big-Ten Player of the Year award winners and seven NBA draft picks is beyond impressive. So were the 15 weeks it was ranked in the top 10.
