Charles Matthews lives up to his potential

Saying Charles Matthews has been bad this season might be a bit hyperbolic, because even in games he’s struggled he has provided good-to-great defense and been one of the team’s best rebounders. But he has been disappointing. For somebody who posts a 25.5 percent usage rate when he’s on the floor, he turns the ball over too much, and he’s not always the most efficient scorer.

After struggling throughout Big Ten play, he’s been starting to play better down the closing stretch of the season. The Texas A&M game was easily his best game in a Michigan uniform.

Matthews had the third-most points on the team with 18, making 8 of his 11 attempts. He shined especially bright in the second half of the game, with tons of nifty moves breaking apart the Aggies’ defense in the paint.

Matthews hasn’t had this strong of a performance since he was beating up on completely overmatched teams in non-conference play. He weaved through Texas A&M’s intimidating frontcourt like it was nothing. Along with his 18 points, he added five rebounds and two assists, only turning the ball over once.

When he’s on his game, Charles Matthews can be the best player on this Michigan Wolverines team. His athleticism and confidence are off the charts. He may have had consistency issues this season, but he’s showing up when it counts most.
