Michigan Basketball: 3 takeaways for the Wolverines in the West Region
Storylines are abound in West Region bracket
The opening game against Montana is the most important right now for Michigan, but down the road, there could be lot of fun of matchups in the West Region.
Right away, there could be an intriguing meeting in the second round between Michigan and San Diego State, the two former programs coached by Steve Fisher. It won’t be as juicy as it would if Fisher was still the coach, but still, he has ties to both programs.
There could also be a rematch of Michigan-North Carolina. Not only did the two teams met earlier this season, but they also played in the 1993 National Championship. UM and the Tar Heels haven’t met since in the NCAA Tournament, so that would be an interesting draw.
The possibility of a Michigan-Ohio State game in the Elite 8 is also possible. The fifth-seeded Buckeyes and third-seeded Wolverines have a lot of work to do to make that happen, but there’s a chance. Another possible Elite 8 game is between North Carolina and Gonzaga, the two participants in last season’s title game.
The West Region isn’t the toughest in the field of 68, but it might be the most interesting.
