Where will Michigan be seeded for March Madness?

With the win over Purdue, Michigan basketball officially clinched its spot in the NCAA Tournament, earning the Big Ten’s automatic bid. The question is, where will the Wolverines be seeded?

Before the win over Purdue, Jerry Palm of CBS had the Wolverines listed as a five seed, which is frankly ridiculous. I explain why here. Joe Lunardi of ESPN had Michigan as a five prior to the Big Ten semifinals, so we’ll see what impact the wins over Michigan State and Purdue will have.

Yet, when you look at the Wolverines resume, there is no doubt they should be a three seed, at the very least, maybe higher. Michigan basketball has a record of 7-5 against quadrant 1 teams. They boast wins over Michigan State (2), Ohio State, Purdue, Texas, Penn State, Maryland (2), UCLA and Nebraska.

The Wolverines have beaten four top-10 teams this season and have won three straight games against top-10 foes. Michigan has also beaten the second-ranked team in the country, twice, on the road and on a neutral floor. There is also a total of five wins over NCAA Tournament opponents.

Michigan should be ranked in the top 10 of the AP and coaches polls Monday and with its resume, anything worse than a three seed in the big dance will be pure robbery. They are an elite team and should be seeded that way.
