A fresh start in a new rivalry

When you play or coach for Michigan football, rivalry games are just part of the process. With Ohio State, Michigan State and Notre Dame, the Wolverines have more big-name rivals than most.

Yet, in his first three seasons at Michigan, winning these games has been an issue for Harbaugh. He’s 0-3 against the Buckeyes and 1-2 against Michigan State, despite having the more talented team all three years.

Unfortunately for Harbaugh, he has yet to try his luck with the Irish, which will obviously change Sept. 1 of 2018. What’s encouraging for Michigan fans, is that even before Harbaugh, the Wolverines did well in this rivalry.

Heck, Rich Rodriguez had a 2-1 record against the Irish, winning back-to-back games against them in 2009 and 2010. Even Hoke fared well against Notre Dame, going 2-2. The win back in 2011, was actually quite amazing and can be re-lived in the video above.

So when the Wolverines and Irish meet, Michigan football fans won’t feel like they haven’t beaten the Irish in forever, even though it has been four years. But still, in 42 meetings, Michigan holds the edge with a 24-17-1 record.
