Harbaugh has to do better in big games

Let’s quash the fire Jim Harbaugh talk before it gets started. Hopefully, people aren’t thinking that way, but they probably are. It’s certainly hard not to be disappointed with how the game went, but the answer isn’t to get rid of Harbaugh.

However, the head coach does need to start winning big games. He is now 1-6 against top-10 teams and 1-4 against Michigan State and Ohio State. This team doesn’t have a great quarterback, at least not yet, but the defense is elite. There is enough talent to win some of these games.

Michigan football did play well and when it grabbed a 10-7 lead, victory seemed possible. But it also seemed possible against Michigan State, Florida State and Ohio State last season. At some point, the Wolverines need to win close games against good teams.

If not, the Wolverines will be nothing but an also-ran in the Big Ten and with the one of the highest-paid coaches in the country, they should be much, much more.
