Michigan Football: What to do with Wilton Speight?
By Connor Boyer
Is Wilton Speight the quarterback who can lead this talented Michigan football team to a Big Ten Championship or should Michigan make a change?
Coming into the season there seemed to be a lot of questions surrounding the Michigan football team. The biggest being the experience of the team, or rather the lack thereof. Michigan entered the season replacing 10 starters on defense. 3 starters on the offensive line and pretty much all of the receiving corps.
But 2 weeks into the season that concern has shifted towards the quarterback of the Wolverines. Wilton Speight’s early struggles have been apparent, whether throwing interceptions, fumbling the ball, stalling drives or missing wide open receivers down the field, Speight’s early play has left a lot of fans asking the question “Can Wilton Speight really be the guy to lead to Wolverines to accomplish all the goals they have set out for them in his second year as a starter?”
His numbers don’t exactly create a lot of enthusiasm. Through two games Speight has completed 28 passes on 54 attempts for a completion percentage of 51.9 percent. He’s thrown for 402 yards, 3 touchdowns, and those 2 pick-six’s against Florida. So what to do about the startling early season performance? How should we, the Wolverine faithful, feel about Michigan’s chances of winning the Big Ten with our current starter.
Wilton Speight has not looked great in the first 2 games of the year. In fact at time’s he’s looked bad. A lot of fans are already calling for a change in starters. Maybe coach Harbaugh should put in the young Brandon Peters and get him some experience to prepare for the future. However, that’s the wrong idea. Because Michigan doesn’t need to be playing for future seasons, they should be all in for right now, and the focus should be winning a Big Ten Championship this year, and Wilton Speight can be the quarterback to achieve that goal.
Here are a couple ideas to fix the problem:
