Offense

I like this version compared to last year and the year before. I think Michigan football is showing the character of their head coach more every year. Wilton Speight still needs some work. I don’t totally blame both those pick sixes all on him. But I do blame the first one more on him than Crawford – there was no reason for the pass to be thrown that high IMO.

The second one – there was a line twist – Mason Cole followed the DE inward and Ben Bredeson didn’t react to the DT going outside. I’m not sure which of the two were more to blame – maybe communication? But Speight surely could have thought of a better option than to throw into a crowd of two blue jerseys and two Maize ones, yes?

Aside from that Mrs. Lincoln, how’d you like the first half? OK, well if I get to play Mrs. Lincoln I’m going to voice my displeasure. Now, I know that I am only a legend in my own mind. And I know that Tim Drevno and the rest of the Maize and Blue offensive brain trust has forgotten more about this game that I’ll ever know, but … I have been having such a sweet fantasy of Michigan football using Ty Isaac early in the game to wear down and take the starch out of the defense. Then use Chris Evans in space in many varied and pretty ways.

Imagine my surprise when they kept running Evans right up the middle of the Florida defense before we had a chance to tenderize them. Well, I was surprised except I wasn’t really surprised at the results. OK, I had my say, let’s move along to other things.

The offensive line: It was an improvement. There was some good and bad. Nolan Ulizio looked better on run blocking than pass blocking. They were facing an excellent Florida DL and they did at least an adequate job and they got better as the game wore on – you can’t ask for a whole lot more than that.

I was really happy with the TE group. A lot of young guys making blocks and catches, including Ian Bunting (several nice blocks) Zach Gentry and catches from Sean McKeon.

We saw some flashes from our skill guys and I expect we are going to see a lot more from them over this season. It was a good start.
